App Overview
WordPad is a lightweight rich text editor built into Windows by Microsoft. It sits between Notepad (plain text) and full Microsoft Word. It is designed for drafting memos, letters and simple documents, supporting basic formatting and image insertion. There is no standalone mobile app for WordPad. Starting from Windows 11 24H2, Microsoft has removed WordPad from the system and it is no longer preinstalled. It comes free on older Windows versions with no ads or subscriptions, and no installation package is required.
Top Features
- Fast startup and low resource consumption
It launches quickly and runs smoothly even on older low‑spec PCs. You can edit formatted documents without installing the full Office suite. It works fully offline and requires no account sign‑in. - Basic rich text formatting
It supports font type, font size, bold, italic, underline, text color, text alignment, bullet lists and paragraph indentation. Local images and date/time objects can be inserted into files. - Multi‑format support and printing
It can open and save RTF and TXT files, and handles simple DOCX and ODT documents. Print preview and printing functions are available, so you can print files without Office. - Clean pasted text from web pages
When you paste copied web content into WordPad, messy web styles get stripped away, leaving clean plain formatted text for note‑taking.
Areas for Improvement
- No built‑in spelling or grammar check
There are no error alerts or thesaurus. You must manually proofread all writing. - Lack of advanced layout tools
It does not support tables, headers, footers, footnotes, tables of contents, macros or multi‑column layouts. Complex DOCX files may lose formatting when opened. It only works for simple drafts. - No native cloud sync or PDF export
Files save locally only. There is no one‑click PDF export. You can store files in OneDrive folders manually, but the app itself has no cloud sync function. - Discontinued and removed in new Windows releases
Microsoft no longer maintains WordPad. After upgrading to Windows 11 24H2, WordPad will no longer be available. Alternatives include Microsoft Word and LibreOffice Writer. - Compatibility limitations
Complex Word documents may break formatting. It may lag when editing very long, large documents.
User Feedback
Positive: Users praise WordPad for its lightweight design, zero cost, no login requirement and fast launch. It is great for quick drafts, notes and cleaning copied web text without opening heavy office software.
Negative: Users complain about missing spell check, no table support, poor compatibility with complex DOCX files, and its removal in newer Windows versions. It is unsuitable for academic papers, formal reports or publishing‑quality work.
Overall Evaluation
WordPad is a classic lightweight local rich‑text editor. It works well for simple writing tasks on older Windows systems. It is a legacy built‑in program and not available on mobile phones. If you use Windows 11 24H2 or later, use Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer or online document editors for formatted documents.
